Memorial weekend is here and some of us don’t have plans yet. Some of you will be grilling, cleaning up the yard, visiting family and going to parades. I on the other hand will not be doing any of those. I live in the city of Chicago, which makes it difficult for me to grill or clean up my non-existing yard, or even close enough to visit family. So this year I have decided to find and research places close to Chicago that would make for a sun day trip.

Saugautuck/ Douglas Michigan

Saugatuck and Douglas are very quaint laid back villages on the west side of Michigan. They feature harbors and small mom and pop shops that will have you finding the most unique and desirable chachkies.  Saugatuck is only 2 hours away from Chicago and makes for a wonderful and relaxing day trip.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Within an hour and a half you can drive to the biggest city in Wisconsin, which is Milwaukee. Milwaukee is on the west shore of Lake Michigan and home to many attractions. A staple attraction would definitely be its brewing traditions. In the past, Milwaukee was home to four different brewing companies, Schlitz, Blatz, Pabst and Miller. You are now able to take brewery tours and enjoy your day with some beer and history.

Indiana Dunes

If you are looking for a fun activity to get the family out of the house, we would recommend Indiana Dunes. With 15 miles of sandy coastline it would a day of fun and relaxation. We do not suggest getting into the lake since it is around 50°F, this time of year, but a picnic and volleyball would make for a fun day. Keep in mind, if sand isn’t your thing, Indian Dunes is only 1 hour from the city, you will have enough time to drive back and squeeze in more activities.

No matter what you do this weekend please take a moment and remember the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

Have a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend!
